San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks are a National Hockey League (NHL) team that competes in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. Based in San Jose, California, the Sharks have been an integral part of the Bay Area sports landscape since the early nineties.

History of the San Jose Sharks

Founded as an expansion franchise in 1991, the Sharks became the first NHL team based in San Jose.1 The team earned its first playoff berth in the 1993-1994 season, marking an early milestone for the young franchise.1 The team found their stride during the 1997-98 season, with five consecutive years of postseason appearances.1

Over the years, San Jose has reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs over 20 times, including an appearance in the Stanley Cup Final during the 2015-16 season. Throughout franchise history, standout players such as Patrick Marleau, Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski, and Evgeni Nabokov have helped shape the team’s competitive identity.2

While still pursuing their first Stanley Cup championship win, the Sharks have remained consistent contenders in the Western Conference across multiple eras.

San Jose Sharks at SAP Center

The Sharks play at SAP Center at San Jose, located in downtown San Jose. The stadium first opened in 1993 and is widely known among fans as the “Shark Tank” for its loud, high-energy atmosphere.3
The multi-purpose stadium is also used for concerts and other athletic events such as NCAA Men's Basketball games and WWE SmackDown. The Center can seat 17,500 fans for hockey games and 18,500 for basketball, concerts, and other events.4

SAP Center features a range of seating options, including lower bowl seats close to the ice, club seating, suites, and upper-level sections with full-ice views.4 The arena’s design and enthusiastic crowd contribute to one of the most intense home-ice environments in the NHL. In fact, the arena was nominated as “Arena of the Year” in both 2005 and 2007 by Pollstar.3

Conveniently located near public transportation and city attractions, SAP Center provides plenty of pre- and post-game day activities for hockey fans.
