Indiana Fever
Spirited fans, top-tier competition, and record-breaking stat lines define game day in Indianapolis, home of the Indiana Fever. The Indiana Fever are a women’s basketball team that plays in the Eastern Conference of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).
After over twenty years in the league, the Fever have generated significant media buzz in recent seasons following their number one draft pick selections in the 2023 and 2024 WNBA Drafts. Since their founding, fans have become known for showing boisterous, loyal support at Fever home games.1
The Fever have been a big part of Indiana basketball culture from their early years. Indiana fans affectionately refer to their passion for basketball, be it the Fever, the Pacers, or local high school and college teams, as “The Hoosier Madness” or “Hoosier hysteria.”2 Indeed, the state is home to some of the fiercest and most ardent fans of the sport.

History of the Indiana Fever
Following the construction of Gainbridge Fieldhouse in 1999 as the Pacers' new home arena, the WNBA approved a bid to bring an expansion team to Indiana. The Fever’s marketing campaign for new fans used the slogan “Catch the Fever.”
The Fever played their first season in 2000, but really found their stride in 2008 under head coach Lin Dunn. They won their first championship in 2012 against the Minnesota Lynx. Tamika Catchings, who was drafted by the Fever in 2001, was named Finals MVP after averaging 22.3 points, 6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in the series.1,10
After a disappointing few years, the Fever began a rebuilding campaign. Their challenges making the playoffs continued until they acquired number one draft picks Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark in 2023 and 2024. Clark, the college basketball celebrity, became the Fever’s star player and renewed fans’ passion for the team.3
Indiana Fever at Gainbridge Fieldhouse
The distinct architecture of Gainbridge Fieldhouse has made it a cultural centerpiece for Indianapolis. Located downtown, the arena is adjacent to Morris Bicentennial Plaza, a public park and recreation center.
The Fever’s home venue underwent a phased renovation in the early 2020s that increased the seating capacity to roughly 20,000, added a variety of dining and beverage vendors, and revamped the interior design.
