History of the Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox is one of baseball’s oldest franchises, founded in 1894 as a minor league team in Sioux City.1 The team was purchased by Charles Comiskey and relocated to St. Paul, Minnesota, where it played until 1900.1 In 1900, the team moved to Chicago and was renamed to the White Stockings. In 1901, the White Stockings became one of the first eight charter members in MLB.1

From its inception, the White Sox were a force to be reckoned with. They won their first American League Pennant in 1901 and won the World Series against the Chicago Cubs just five years later in 1906.1 One of the team’s most memorable seasons occurred in 2005, when the team won 99 games in the regular season and went 11-1 in the playoffs, ultimately defeating the Houston Astros in the World Series.1

Over the years, the White Sox have remained a competitive team in the American League, appearing in the playoffs numerous times and racking up multiple individual player awards.

Chicago White Sox at Rate Field

The Chicago White Sox play their home games at Rate Field. The stadium has gone through several name changes, first known as Comiskey Park when it opened in 1991.2 It was renamed U.S. Cellular Field in 2003, then Guaranteed Rate Field in 2016.2 By December 2024, it was known as Rate Field.2

The stadium approximately 40,000 baseball fans and is located in the Bridgeport neighborhood, about six miles south of downtown Chicago.2 The stadium is conveniently located on the city’s public transit subway line and within close proximity to some restaurants and bars for pre- and post-game day fun.3
