Djo’s Background

Joe Keery was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and studied theater at DePaul University in Chicago. While in college, he helped form the psychedelic rock band Post Animal and performed as the guitarist on the group’s early releases. Around the same time, he began acting and later gained recognition for his role as Steve Harrington on Stranger Things.1

During breaks from filming, Keery began recording his own music and developed the sound that became Djo. He released his debut album, Twenty Twenty, in 2019, introducing a blend of synth-pop, electronic influences, and psychedelic rock that would define Djo’s early identity.1
