About St. Augustine Amphitheatre
In 1965, the city of St. Augustine was commemorating the 400th anniversary of Pedro Menendez de Aviles’ discovery of the land that would later become St. Augustine. The site of his discovery became the first European settlement in what is now the USA. To celebrate the anniversary, the city underwent a revamping, which included constructing an amphitheater.2
The St. Augustine Amphitheatre was originally built to host a play called Cross and Sword. In 1988, other live theater productions joined the rotation. It would continue to host the Cross and Sword and other live productions until 1999, when the amphitheatre made the switch to live concerts and began bringing in some of the biggest names in music.7
