History of the San Jose Earthquakes
The San Jose Earthquakes were founded in 1994 and competed as the San Jose Clash when MLS launched in 1996. The club rebranded to the Earthquakes in 1999, reconnecting with the name of a previous North American Soccer League team that played in the region.2
San Jose captured MLS Cup championships in 2001 and 2003, establishing one of the league’s early dynasties. After the 2005 season, the franchise relocated, and MLS later awarded San Jose a new expansion team that resumed play in 2008.2
Throughout these eras, the Earthquakes have been a fixture in Northern California soccer, with several influential players and coaches helping to shape the club’s identity.2
San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park
PayPal Park opened in 2015 as the Earthquakes’ permanent home and seats 18,000 fans. Located near the San Jose International Airport, the stadium features a distinctive open-air design that keeps supporters close to the pitch.3
A large outdoor bar area, one of the longest in North America, overlooks the field, adding to the social atmosphere.3 Steep seating angles help concentrate the sound, while the supporters’ sections create a constant wave of chants and color.3
