About Portland Timbers
Portland Timbers
On matchday in Portland, a sea of green scarves lifts, and behind the goal, a log waits. When the Timbers score, Timber Joey, the mascot, cuts a slab from it — a ritual that’s tied to the region’s historical timber industry roots.1,2
The Portland Timbers joined Major League Soccer in 2011, bringing top-division soccer to a city with a rich professional sports history.1,3 Providence Park sits just west of downtown Portland, with historic architecture and a steep seating layout that keeps the action in clear view throughout the stadium.4

History of the Portland Timbers
Professional soccer in Portland predates MLS by decades. The original Timbers joined the North American Soccer League in 1975 and reached Soccer Bowl ’75 in their inaugural season, a run that helped lay the foundation for the city’s soccer culture.3
Portland revived the Timbers name in lower-division leagues during the 2000s before entering Major League Soccer as an expansion club in 2011.1,3 In 2015, the MLS-era Timbers won MLS Cup, capturing the club’s first league title since joining MLS.1 Portland also advanced to the MLS Cup Final in 2018 and 2021, earning Western Conference championships in both seasons.1
Portland Timbers at Providence Park
Providence Park has hosted soccer in Portland in various forms since the 1920s, and is the current home field for both the Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns FC.4 A major renovation completed in 2019 added approximately 4,000 seats, raising Providence Park’s capacity to 25,218 and improving hospitality spaces and club seating.4,5
The seating has a sharp rise along the sidelines and behind the goals, keeping the sound contained and constant.4 The North End of the field at Providence Park is the visual and emotional center of the stadium, where raucous and coordinated chants continue until the end of each match.4
Food and beverage options inside the stadium feature many Portland-based vendors and regional offerings that show off the city’s diverse culinary scene.6
Soccer tickets at Providence Park put you in the middle of an atmosphere that’s shaped by decades of Portland soccer culture.
