Austin FC became Major League Soccer’s 27th franchise when the league awarded the club to Austin, Texas, on October 12, 2018. The team began MLS competition in 2021 and became the first major professional sports franchise based in the city at Q2 Stadium in North Austin.¹

Major League Soccer officially announced Austin as an expansion market in 2018, marking the start of top-division soccer in the city.¹ Austin FC made its MLS debut on April 17, 2021. The club’s first home match took place at Q2 Stadium on June 19, 2021, drawing a sellout crowd for the stadium’s inaugural MLS game.¹

In 2022, Austin FC finished second in the Western Conference standings. That same season, the club advanced to the MLS Western Conference Final, reaching the conference championship round in just its second year of competition.¹

Q2 Stadium opened in 2021 in North Austin as the city’s first major league sports venue, built specifically for soccer.² The stadium seats around 20,500 fans and has a canopy roof that’s designed to provide shade across much of the seating areas.²

For MLS matches, the layout keeps supporters close, concentrating crowd noise and tightening sightlines throughout the stadium, while concession areas include Austin-based food vendors, fusing local culinary partners directly into the match-day environment.²

• MLS Doug Hamilton Executive of the Year (2022): Club President Andy Loughnane received this league honor as part of MLS year-end awards, recognizing executive leadership across the organization.³
• Multiple MLS Year-End Department Awards (2022): Austin FC’s Communications, Marketing, and Ticket Sales departments were each named the best in MLS during the league's year-end recognitions.³
• Mark Abbott MLS Club Award for Sponsorship Activation of the Year (2024): The club earned this award for its Evergreen sustainability platform, with Q2 Stadium becoming the first soccer-specific stadium and the fifth sports venue globally to achieve TRUE Gold certification while maintaining over 90% waste diversion.⁴
