The current franchise began as the Atlanta Thrashers in 1997 and debuted in 1999 before relocating to Manitoba.¹ The Jets name honors the original franchise that played in Winnipeg from 1972 to 1996 before relocating to Phoenix and being renamed to the Coyotes.²
