Founded in 1972 as part of the World Hockey Association (WHA), the Oilers played their first game as an NHL team in 1979.¹ Wayne Gretzky first joined the team when the Oilers were still competing in the WHA, and continued to play for the team once they joined the NHL, helping the team reach success quickly, winning their first Stanley Cup in 1984.¹
