Athletics

The Athletics — commonly known as the A’s, and formerly the Oakland Athletics — are a Major League Baseball (MLB) team competing in the American League (AL) West Division. Known for their rich history, championship pedigree, and innovative “Moneyball” approach to roster building, the A’s have long been one of baseball’s most fascinating franchises.

Fans can experience the excitement of live MLB action by securing Athletics tickets on AXS for home and away games throughout the season.

History of the Athletics

Founded in 1901 as one of the American League’s original teams, the Athletics originally were known as the Philadelphia Athletics baseball club.1 In 1954, the Athletics were sold to Arnold Johnson and were then moved to Kansas City, MO.2 After a brief stint in Kansas City, the Athletics eventually moved even further west to Oakland, CA in 1968.3 The franchise has won nine World Series championships, four of them during their time in Oakland.4

The Athletics built an impressive baseball dynasty in the early 1970s, winning three consecutive World Series titles from 1972 to 1974.4 In the late 1980s and early 1990s, stars like Rickey Henderson, Mark McGwire, and José Canseco led the team to another championship in 1989.4

In the early 2000s, the Athletics gained national attention once more for its data-driven team-building strategy, popularized in the book and film Moneyball, further cementing the franchise’s legacy as one of MLB’s most innovative organizations.4

Athletics at Sutter Health Park

The Athletics currently play at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, CA, while their new stadium is being built in Nevada. The park seats 15,000 baseball fans and is home to the AAA affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, the Sacramento River Cats. Sutter Health Park is home to a number of other events, including concerts, religious events, festivals and more.5 The park features skyline views, modern architecture, and a convenient proximity to bars and restaurants.

The Athletics previously played at the Oakland Coliseum, which was also home to the Oakland Raiders until they officially moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2019.6 The Coliseum is the fifth-oldest ballpark used in MLB, behind only Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, Dodger Stadium, and Angel Stadium.6 The Athletics' first game at the Coliseum was on April 17, 1968, and their last game was on September 26, 2024, defeating the Texas Rangers before moving to their temporary home in Sacramento.7

The Athletics are expected to move to their new Las Vegas stadium in 2028. The stadium will be built on the former site of the Tropicana Las Vegas resort.8
