Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles are a cornerstone of Major League Baseball’s American League East Division, and are one of the nation’s earliest incorporated teams.1 The team, named after the official state bird of Maryland, plays its home games at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Orioles games immerse locals and visitors alike in the city’s character, blending historic surroundings and a fan-forward atmosphere.

History of the Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles weren’t always situated in Baltimore. In fact, the team was originally known as the Milwaukee Brewers and was located in Wisconsin. Founded in 1901, the team didn’t relocate to Baltimore until 1954, when it officially changed its name to the Orioles.1

The Orioles had a rocky start but began to make strides in the mid-1960s.2 Having competed in the World Series seven times, the Orioles were a force to be reckoned with in the mid to late 60s and early seventies. During the span of 1966-1971, the Orioles appeared in the World Series four times and won two of the four of those series.2

Many notable players were Orioles, including MLB Hall of Fame inductees Eddie Murray, Cal Ripken Jr., and Jim Palmer. Several managers and executives have also been inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame, including Frank Robinson, Earl Weaver, and Lee MacPhail.3

Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park

The Baltimore Orioles played at Memorial Stadium (first used for football and Minor League Baseball) from 1954 to 1991.

From 1992 to the present, the Baltimore Orioles have played at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, located near downtown Baltimore’s Inner Harbor Area.4 With a capacity of 48,876, Oriole Park at Camden Yards was inspired by early-1900s ballparks, featuring classic brick-and-steel architecture, asymmetrical field dimensions, and a prime downtown location.5

One of the most unique features of the ballpark is two orange seats, one located in right-center field and the other in left field, that mark the locations of Cal Ripken Jr.’s 278th home run and Eddie Murray’s 500th home run.6

Oriole Park features beautiful views of the city skyline and is renowned for its blend of old and modern design.

Awards
