Dallas Wings

The Dallas Wings are a professional basketball team that plays in the Western Conference of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

The Wings relocated to Arlington, Texas in 2016, continuing the franchise originally known as the Detroit Shock. The move brought WNBA basketball back to the state of Texas after an 8-year-drought, following the departure of the Houston Comets in 2008.1,2

In Arlington, the Wings compete in a city surrounded by major professional sports venues and year-round sports activity. Inside College Park Center, the steep lower bowl keeps fans close to the floor and locked into every possession.3 The team is set to enter an exciting new era following their back-to-back number one draft pick selections in the 2025 and 2026 WNBA Drafts.7

History of the Dallas Wings

The franchise began as the Detroit Shock in 1998, and built early momentum in the league’s first decade. The organization captured three WNBA championships in 2003, 2006, and 2008 during its time in Michigan.1,2 The titles won in the 2000s remain the high point of the franchise’s record.1,2

After relocating to Tulsa in 2010 and again to Arlington in 2016, the team adopted the Dallas Wings name. The team is still looking to capture its first WNBA championship in the Dallas era, and with back-to-back number one draft picks in 2025 and 2026, they are set up for a strong rebuild.5

Dallas Wings at College Park Center

College Park Center opened in 2012 on the University of Texas at Arlington campus and seats approximately 7,000 fans for basketball. The lower bowl rises quickly from the court, keeping sound tight and reactions immediate.3

The arena also hosts UT Arlington Mavericks Men’s Basketball games as well as other professional events.3 On Dallas Wings game nights, the layout keeps the action close and the atmosphere tight, giving games in Arlington a high-energy feel.3

For marquee matchups, the Wings occasionally play at the American Airlines Center, home of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.

Awards

While the Dallas era has yet to see a championship banner, the franchise’s Detroit era produced three championships and each era has produced several major individual award winners.

  • Individual Honors: Paige Bueckers, the number one overall draft pick in 2025, took home Rookie of the Year honors.6 Liz Cambage set the WNBA single-game scoring record in 2018 with 53 points.1 Point guard Arike Ogunbowale is the franchise’s all-time leading scorer, having broken Deanna Nolan’s record of 3,971 points on September 12, 2024.7
  • WNBA Championships (2003, 2006, 2008): The franchise secured three league titles during its Detroit era, establishing its most successful competitive stretch.1,2
  • WNBA Finals Appearances (2003, 2006, 2007, 2008): Between 2003 and 2008, the Detroit-era team reached four WNBA Finals and finished runner-up in 2007 to the Phoenix Mercury.1,2
