Calgary Stampede

The Calgary Stampede is a 10-day-long festival that dates back to 1912, with roots in an earlier event that started in 1886. Nicknamed the “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth,” the Stampede is held annually each July in Calgary, Alberta.1

As one of the largest rodeos in the world, the Calgary Stampede hosts a variety of events, including parades, concerts, chuckwagon races, agricultural competitions, and exhibitions of First Nations' culture and traditions. There’s also a midway that features rides, games, and classic fairground foods.1

About Calgary Stampede

The Calgary Stampede traces its roots to 1886 when the Calgary District and Agricultural Society held their first Exhibition. By 1889, the Agricultural Society had purchased 94 acres and opened Victoria Park to continue hosting its Exhibition. In 1901, the City of Calgary purchased the park and leased it back to the Exhibition for continued use.5

Over the years, several stampedes were held on the grounds until the 1920s, when the Exhibition began to incorporate the Stampede, combining the two and making it an annual event.5
