History of the Colorado Rockies
Alongside the Miami Marlins, Denver was approved by Major League owners as the new home for an expansion baseball team in 1991.1 The team played its first game in 1993 at the Mile High Stadium, where they played for two years before moving to their new home at Coors Field in 1995.1
Colorado reached its first postseason in 1995 as a Wild Card team, becoming the first expansion team to do so before its eighth year of competition.1 The Rockies have made multiple playoff appearances since.
Their most memorable run came in 2007 when the Rockies nearly missed the playoffs until they beat the San Diego Padres in a Wild Card tiebreaker game and advanced to the World Series after an incredible late-season push known as “Rocktober.”1 That stretch cemented the team’s place in MLB history and remains a defining moment for fans.
Over the years, the Rockies have been home to standout players who have delivered All-Star performances, Silver Slugger awards, Gold Gloves, and franchise records.
Colorado Rockies at Coors Field
The Colorado Rockies play at Coors Field, located in the lower downtown area of Denver. The stadium opened in 1995 and features an impressive view of the Rocky Mountains.2 It’s the third-oldest active stadium in the National League behind Wrigley Field (1914) and Dodger Stadium (1962).3 The stadium can seat up to a little more than 46,000 baseball fans.2
Aside from stunning mountain views, the stadium was also the first ballpark with a heated infield and grass to melt snow.3 Another unique facet of this stadium is its high elevation, which helps baseballs go further than at other stadiums.4 Due to the record-number of home runs being hit, the Rockies built a humidor room in 2002 to keep baseballs from drying out and being hit out of the park so often.4
Awards
Over the years, the Rockies have achieved numerous awards both as a team and for individual players.
