History of the Tampa Bay Lightning

The Tampa Bay Lightning was established as an NHL expansion team on December 6, 1990, and played their first season in 1992–93. Hall of Famer Phil Esposito was the founding General Manager and named the team after Tampa Bay's status as the “Lightning Capital of North America." Coach Terry Crisp led the inaugural team to a successful debut season.4 The franchise captured its first Stanley Cup in 2004, led by the league’s leading scorer, Martin St. Louis. They then achieved back-to-back championships in 2020 and 2021.1
