About Real Salt Lake

Sport
Soccer

Real Salt Lake (RSL) is an American professional soccer franchise that competes as a member club of Major League Soccer (MLS)' Western Conference. RSL began play in 2005 as an expansion team of the league. The club was founded in 2004 when the club's first owner and founder was awarded an expansion berth in Major League Soccer.

The club plays its home games at Rio Tinto Stadium, a soccer-specific stadium located in the Salt Lake City suburb of Sandy, Utah, since 2008. RSL initially played home games at Rice-Eccles Stadium, located on the campus of the University of Utah, from 2005–2008. The team is currently led by head coach Pablo Mastroeni.

In domestic soccer, Real Salt Lake won the 2009 MLS Cup and were runners-up in the 2013 MLS Cup, the Supporters Shield in 2010, and the 2013 edition of the U.S. Open Cup. The franchise regional success to date was in the 2010–11 CONCACAF Champions League, where RSL finished runners-up in the tournament becoming the first American club, since the CONCACAF Champions League format was introduced in 2008, to advance to the final stage of the tournament.

History of Real Salt Lake

Real Salt Lake was founded in 2004 and began MLS play in 2005 as an expansion club. The team adopted its name through an early relationship with Spain’s Real Madrid, with RSL’s owner wanting to bring a European tradition to Utah soccer.4

In 2009, RSL won the MLS Cup by defeating the LA Galaxy in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in the final. The championship remains the club’s only MLS Cup title.4

The following year, Real Salt Lake advanced to the 2010-11 CONCACAF Champions League Final in a run that marked the club’s strongest international showing and expanded its presence beyond North America.4

Real Salt Lake at America First Field

America First Field opened in 2008 in Sandy and seats approximately 20,000 fans. Built specifically for the sport, the steep seating bowl keeps fans close and intensifies organized supporter chants throughout the venue.5 Mountain views frame the stadium, but the design keeps attention fixed on the field.

The stadium also serves as the home field for the Utah Royals. At the south end, you’ll find dedicated supporter sections whose coordinated chants and songs help set the rhythm of matchday.5
