The Truman opened its doors as a music venue in September 2017, having been converted from a former auto body shop. Marathon Live, the owner of the venue, focused on keeping Kansas Citians at the forefront of the remodeling and featured local artists in the branding and design. Kansas City residents even chose the name The Truman through a public contest.8
