About Ellie Caulkins Opera House

The original building, the Denver Municipal Auditorium, opened on July 5, 1908, to host the Democratic National Convention that year.2 Over the next century, the space hosted conventions, civic events, opera, rodeos, basketball, and more. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a recognized historic civic landmark in Denver.2

In 2002, Denver citizens approved a bond issue to fund a major restoration to preserve the historic Neoclassical exterior and rebuild the interior as an opera house.3 The Caulkins family donated $7 million to the project, and the City and County of Denver named the venue in honor of the opera singer Ellie Caulkins.3

The opera house has 2,200 seats across four levels - balcony, loge, mezzanine, and orchestra.1 It’s one of only three opera houses in the U.S. and nine worldwide with the Figaro seatback tilting system.1
