The Ellie Caulkins Opera House anchors downtown Denver's vibrant arts corridor, surrounded by restaurants, hotels, and cultural institutions that make the neighborhood a destination before and after any performance. The Denver Performing Arts Complex sits at the heart of it all, just steps from the 16th Street Mall.

The Denver Performing Arts Complex parking garage is the most convenient option, with about 1,700 parking spaces — though it fills up fast on performance days, so plan to arrive early.⁹

Public Transportation: Denver’s Regional Transportation District (RTD) serves the venue. Light Rail and multiple bus routes stop near the DPAC; the 16th Street Mall Free Ride connects to the theater district.⁹

Driving: Find the Ellie Caulkins Opera House at 1385 Curtis Street, Denver, CO 80204. The best access to the Ellie Caulkins Opera House is via I-25. Take the Speer Boulevard South exit, then turn left on Arapahoe Street. 14th Street & Curtis Street is the main pedestrian entrance to the Arts Complex.

Outside drinks and food are not allowed inside the theater itself.⁵ There are a variety of pre-show, post-show, and intermission drink and food options. The in-house restaurant is open before shows on select nights.¹⁰

Concessions are available at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, including alcohol (mixed drinks, beer, and wine).¹⁰ There are also many dining options around the Denver Center for the Performing Arts for pre- and post-show meals.

The original building, the Denver Municipal Auditorium, opened on July 5, 1908, to host the Democratic National Convention that year.² Over the next century, the space hosted conventions, civic events, opera, rodeos, basketball, and more. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a recognized historic civic landmark in Denver.²

In 2002, Denver citizens approved a bond issue to fund a major restoration to preserve the historic Neoclassical exterior and rebuild the interior as an opera house.³ The Caulkins family donated $7 million to the project, and the City and County of Denver named the venue in honor of the opera singer Ellie Caulkins.³

The opera house has 2,200 seats across four levels - balcony, loge, mezzanine, and orchestra.¹ It’s one of only three opera houses in the U.S. and nine worldwide with the Figaro seatback tilting system.¹
