About LA Kings

Sport
Hockey

Owned and operated by AEG, the LA Kings began play in 1967.  Initially playing in the Forum in Inglewood, the franchise soon established itself both on the ice, behind star players such as Rogie Vachon and Marcel Dionne, both Hall of Famers, and off the ice, where the Kings continue to strive for innovation in a constant pursuit of excellence with a first-class commitment to our fans and partners, and with an unmatched pledge to improving our community.  In 1988, the Kings shocked the sports world with the acquisition of Wayne Gretzky and five years later the Kings advanced to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time. In 1999, the Kings built Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles, and they ultimately enjoyed their “crowning moments” earning the franchise’s first two Stanley Cup championships in 2012 and 2014 respectively.

History of the Los Angeles Kings

Los Angeles joined the NHL as part of the league’s first major expansion in 1967, under entrepreneur Jack Kent Cooke.¹ Skating in purple-and-gold sweaters at the Forum, the early Kings worked tirelessly to sell sun-soaked Californians on an icy new pastime. A blockbuster 1988 trade for Wayne Gretzky vaulted the sport into Hollywood headlines and ignited a youth-hockey boom: USA Hockey registrations in California jumped from about 2,900 players in 1988 to nearly 15,000 by the mid-1990s.²

The club’s on-ice pinnacle came with Stanley Cup victories in 2012 and 2014, earned through relentless defense and clutch goaltending by Jonathan Quick against the New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers.⁴

Los Angeles Kings at Crypto.com Arena

Since 1999, the Kings have called downtown’s Crypto.com Arena home.³ Set within the buzzing L.A. LIVE district, the venue pairs concert-calibre acoustics, a massive HD scoreboard, and dramatic lighting effects to give every regular-season clash a playoff feel. Fans can explore dozens of restaurants, bars, and music clubs just steps from the entrance, turning game day into a full-evening outing.³

Awards

With a legacy built on resilience and star performances, the Kings have earned a place in NHL history. The honours below highlight the club’s most defining achievements.

  • Stanley Cup Champions (2012 & 2014): Powered by Jonathan Quick’s playoff heroics and three series-clinching overtime goals, Los Angeles claimed hockey’s ultimate prize twice in three seasons.⁴
  • Smythe Division Crown (1991): Gretzky’s 102-point campaign and Luc Robitaille’s 45 goals drove the Kings to their first—and still only—regular-season division title.⁵
  • Hart Memorial Trophy (1989): “The Great One” Gretzky capped his debut L.A. season with 168 points and league MVP honours, cementing the West-Coast hockey boom.⁶
