History of the Seattle Mariners

The American League was awarded an expansion franchise to Seattle in 1976.1 On August 24 of that year, the team announced the name of the “Mariners”. The name “Mariners” was born as a result of a contest, which included over 600 names and 15,000 votes.

The Kingdome was the stadium where the Mariners played for nearly 23 seasons and was the first domed stadium in the American League.2 On June 27, 1999, the Mariners played their last game in the Kingdome, where they beat the Texas Rangers. From 1999 to 2018, the Mariners played at T-Mobile Park (formerly Safeco Field).

The Mariners have retired two numbers: No. 11 for Edgar Martinez, an 18-year Mariner and 2019 Hall of Fame inductee, and No. 24 for Ken Griffey Jr., who spent 13 seasons with the team, hit 630 career home runs, and became the franchise’s first number retirement in 2016.3

Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park

T-Mobile Park is located in downtown Seattle and has a capacity of 47,943.2 There are 21,000 seats on the main level, 3,700 bleacher seats, and premium seating on the main, club, and suite levels.2

One of T-Mobile Park’s most unique features includes a retractable roof, which covers the field and grandstands in a similar fashion as an umbrella, a reprieve for sports fans given Seattle’s rainy climate. The retractable roof, however, does not enclose the park, ensuring the open-air environment is maintained.

Fans attending Mariners games can visit the Baseball Museum of the Pacific Northwest, located on the main level concourse between sections 132-138.2 Here, fans can learn more about the Mariners roots, the history of baseball in the Pacific Northwest, and learn more about key players.

Awards

The Seattle Mariners have myriad accomplishments, including two Most Valuable Players, Hall of Fame inductees, and the Designated Hitter Award named after one of their very own.

  • Two Most Valuable Players: Ichiro Suzuki and Ken Griffey Jr., both outfielders, were named MVP in 2001 and 1997, respectively.4
  • Hall of Fame: Ken Griffey Jr. was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016. Notably, Griffey was in 13 All-Star games, and received 10 Golden Glove and seven Silver Slugger Awards.5
  • Edgar Martínez Designated Hitter Award: Each year, the MLB awards the top designated hitter. The prestigious award was first implemented in 1973, and was officially renamed for Mariners’ legendary player Edgar Martinez in 2004.6
