Doja Cat

Doja Cat, born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, creates music that mixes pop, R&B, and hip-hop. She gets her inspiration from a range of artists, including Nicki Minaj, Drake, and Busta Rhymes.

As a teenager, Doja Cat posted music on Soundcloud, which led to her big break in 2014. It was the song So High that secured her a contract with record label Kemosabe.

In 2018, she released her debut album, Amala, with the single Candy landing on the Hot 100. Other follow-up albums include Hot Pink and Planet Her. Doja has also collaborated with The Weeknd, Post Malone, Ariana Grande, and more.^1,2

Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini was born in 1995 in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA. When she was 16, she uploaded her music to Soundcloud using the alias Doja Cat.^2,3 Doja is slang for marijuana, and the young artist loved cats, so this was where the name came from.⁴

The singer-songwriter was signed to the record label Kemosabe in 2014. She then released an EP called Purrr! with the hit single So High reaching over 30 million streams.

In 2018, Doja Cat released her debut studio album Amala, which gets its title from her birth name. Next came the album Hot Pink in 2019, which featured Say So, a collaboration with Nicki Minaj. This tune made it to number one on the Billboard charts.

Her third album, Planet Her, featured other big names, including Ariana Grande, Young Thug, and The Weeknd.^1,2

Doja Cat has won multiple awards for her music. Here are some of her career highlights:

• Grammy Award - Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (2022): Doja Cat won a Grammy for Kiss Me More. It was a shared award with SZA.
• Las Vegas Film Critics Society Awards - Best Original Song (2022): This award was for Doja Cat’s single Vegas, which was used in the Elvis movie.
• MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) - Best New Artist (2020): Doja Cat won the VMA award for Push Best New Artist. She was also nominated for Song of the Year for Say So.⁵

The artist has five studio albums, from her debut, Amala, to the 2025 release, Vie. Doja Cat’s biggest hit singles include:

• Paint The Town Red (2023): This single was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for three weeks.²

• Vegas (2022): Doja Cat’s single Vegas was number one on the Billboard Pop Airplay chart for four weeks.²
