Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini was born in 1995 in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA. When she was 16, she uploaded her music to Soundcloud using the alias Doja Cat.2,3 Doja is slang for marijuana, and the young artist loved cats, so this was where the name came from.4

The singer-songwriter was signed to the record label Kemosabe in 2014. She then released an EP called Purrr! with the hit single So High reaching over 30 million streams.

In 2018, Doja Cat released her debut studio album Amala, which gets its title from her birth name. Next came the album Hot Pink in 2019, which featured Say So, a collaboration with Nicki Minaj. This tune made it to number one on the Billboard charts.

Her third album, Planet Her, featured other big names, including Ariana Grande, Young Thug, and The Weeknd.1,2
