About York Barbican

The venue is named after the nearby Barbican attached to Walmgate Bar. The York Barbican was constructed in 1989 for £15 million on the site of a 1980s swimming pool. Under local government management, the centre served the community with a sports hall, auditorium, climbing wall, cafe, and bars. It notably hosted the UK Snooker Championship between 2001 and 2006, and again from 2011 onwards.9,10

Following years of closure and decline, the venue reopened in spring 2011. A £1.5 million refurbishment refocused the purpose of the venue as a pure entertainment and conference space.11,12 Over time, York Barbican has transformed from a multipurpose leisure centre into a cultural landmark delivering diverse performances from local groups to global stars like Elvis Costello, Van Morrison, and Johnny Depp.13
