About Shrine Auditorium
The Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall is a historic venue and a landmark in downtown Los Angeles. The auditorium was designed by architects John C. Austin and Abram M. Edelman, with the interiors designed by the notable theatre architect G. Albert Lansburgh.5 The Moorish Revival style features arches and columns on the exterior that make it instantly recognizable.
When it opened in 1926, the venue was the largest theater in the United States.6 Today, it's still home to the largest proscenium arch stage in North America. The Shrine hosted its first notable award show, the Academy Awards, in 1947. In the late 1970s, the venue began hosting other event shows, and continues to do so today, in addition to the many events held in the adjacent Expo Hall.
