About Churchill Downs

Churchill Downs opened in 1875 under the vision of Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., who sought to create a premier American race inspired by Europe’s major competitions.¹ The racetrack was built on land leased from the Churchill family, whose name it carries today.¹

The first Kentucky Derby was held on May 17, 1875, before 10,000 spectators.¹ The race distance was shortened to its current 1¼ miles in 1896.¹ The Twin Spires, designed in 1895, remain one of the most recognizable symbols in American sport.¹

Modern additions include luxury suites, expanded simulcast areas, permanent lighting installed in 2010, and The Big Board, described as the world’s largest 4K video screen.¹
