About Soldier Field

Soldier Field opened in 1924 as a monumental civic stadium honoring American soldiers. Its neoclassical colonnades quickly became one of Chicago’s most recognizable architectural features.

Early in its history, the venue hosted large-scale public gatherings, including patriotic pageants, collegiate football matchups, and historic events such as the 1926 Army-Navy game and the 1927 Dempsey-Tunney heavyweight title rematch. In 1968, the stadium hosted the first Special Olympic Games.1

Soldier Field’s international profile grew further in 1994, when the stadium welcomed the FIFA World Cup opening ceremonies and several tournament matches. A major renovation completed in 2003 modernized the seating bowl and guest amenities while preserving its historic facade.

In 2011, Soldier Field became the first existing North American stadium to earn LEED-EB certification, highlighting its commitment to sustainability.1 Today, the venue remains a distinctive blend of heritage and innovation, continuing its role as one of the Windy City’s most storied cultural venues.
