About Eden Project
The concept for the Eden Project emerged in the late 1990s as a vision of Tim Smit, a German-born businessman and environmentalist.1,7 He had previously restored the Lost Gardens of Heligan and was looking for his next big project when he discovered a large working china clay pit located in Cornwall.6 After years of construction, the Eden Project officially opened on 17 March 2001 on the site of the disused china clay pit.6
The Eden Project has dual purposes, serving as both an educational charity and a visitor destination that explores the connections between people, plants, and the natural world.6 Its giant biomes, including the Rainforest Biome and Mediterranean Biome, quickly became defining features of the site and of contemporary British architecture.6
Over time, the venue expanded its cultural role through exhibitions, public art, storytelling, and performance, with the Eden Sessions becoming a long-running series of outdoor summer concerts.6 The venue’s concert history includes appearances by Elton John, Björk, Kylie Minogue, Oasis, and Queens of the Stone Age, helping establish Eden as both a landmark attraction and a distinctive live music setting.6
