The Royal Albert Hall first served as a home for political reformer William Wilberforce and was known as the Gore Estate. Royal Albert Hall officially opened in 1871 as part of Prince Albert’s vision for a cultural and scientific district in South Kensington.⁹ Its distinctive elliptical design, vast glass-and-wrought-iron dome, and terracotta frieze made it one of Victorian Britain’s most ambitious public buildings.⁹
