Founded in 1996, the Los Angeles Sparks are one of three original franchises in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). The Sparks have won three WNBA Championships (2001, 2002, 2016) and have qualified for the playoffs in 20 of their 27 seasons. History of the LA Sparks
The Sparks began play in the inaugural 1997 season, defined by the presence of Hall of Fame center Lisa Leslie, a member of the 1996 gold-medal-winning U.S. Olympic team.1 Leslie led the team to its first WNBA championship in 2001, also earning the league's Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.1 In 2002, the Sparks won their second title, becoming back-to-back champions.
In 2008, the team selected Candace Parker of the University of Tennessee with the first overall pick in the WNBA draft.1 Parker became the first player in WNBA history to receive both Rookie of the Year and league MVP awards in the same season.1 Parker, alongside other Sparks greats like Nneka Ogwumike and Kristi Toliver, went on to claim the franchise’s third WNBA title in 2016.8
