The Sparks began play in the inaugural 1997 season, defined by the presence of Hall of Fame center Lisa Leslie, a member of the 1996 gold-medal-winning U.S. Olympic team.¹ Leslie led the team to its first WNBA championship in 2001, also earning the league's Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.¹ In 2002, the Sparks won their second title, becoming back-to-back champions.

In 2008, the team selected Candace Parker of the University of Tennessee with the first overall pick in the WNBA draft.¹ Parker became the first player in WNBA history to receive both Rookie of the Year and league MVP awards in the same season.¹ Parker, alongside other Sparks greats like Nneka Ogwumike and Kristi Toliver, went on to claim the franchise’s third WNBA title in 2016.⁸
