Barely into her mid-twenties, Arlissa has been there, done that already.
No wonder her second act is entirely on her terms, totally to her script and wholly of her own making.
No wonder her “comeback” single feels the like the first flush of her true talent.
Coincidence? Probs not.
Arlissa has, by her own cheerful admission, had some ups and downs.
The A-lister collab that never quite blew up. The “tip for the top” that didn’t really help her to the top. The attempted label makeover that pegged her as a belly-baring poppet. The songs written as an adolescent schoolgirl that felt wrong for a 19-year-old woman. The heavy-duty record contract that overlapped with a suffocating management contract. You name it, Arlissa endured it.
And yet, and yet… Arlissa has emerged from all of the above not just smiling but thriving. The Germany-born, south London-raised singer-songwriter has taken all the set-backs and hard-knocks and alchemised them into her own precious future.
No one’s supporting me, encouraging or funding me? No problem, I’ll film DIY acoustic versions of my songs and post the videos online. Fifty million views for one song can’t be wrong, whereas a handful of music biz gatekeepers certainly can be.
Throw into the mix a superstar, super-keen DJ/producer (Jonas Blue) and a unique record company offer and you have the story of Arlissa’s return: a single, Hearts Ain’t Gonna Lie, that feels, at last, like the true flowering of her talent, and of herself.
“Me now and me then are completely different people,” says Arlissa of the youngster who was included in the BBC’s Sound Of 2013 poll alongside Laura Mvula, Haim, Aluna George, Savages, The Weeknd and Chvrches.
And Arlissa ain’t gonna lie. “Making my music on my terms and releasing it this way is all I ever wanted. The way I’m doing it now feels absolutely right.”
