About The Grand Ole Opry

What began as a simple radio barn dance has now grown into a beloved American institution. The Grand Ole Opry is the longest-running live radio show in the United States, broadcasting every week for the last century.

First known as the WSM Barn Dance and sponsored by the National Life and Accident Insurance Company, the show featured its first performer, Uncle Jimmy Thompson, a fiddle player, in November 1925. It moved to its current location at the Opry House in 1978, leaving behind the slightly less spacious Ryman Auditorium.5

It has been instrumental in launching the careers of countless country superstars, from Hank Williams and Patsy Cline to Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks. Its cultural impact is immeasurable, earning it the title of “country’s most famous stage” and making it a must-see for music lovers from around the world.5
