About Wilco

Genre
Rock

For 30 years, Wilco has been a pioneering force in independent music. The Chicago rock band has released 13 studio albums and won multiple Grammy Awards. They have founded their own record label, dBpm Records, and renowned Solid Sound festival. The sextet comprised of Jeff Tweedy, John Stirratt, Glenn Kotche, Pat Sansone, Nels Cline, and Mikael Jorgensen—continues to be regarded as a live powerhouse, as described by NPR, “To see Wilco on stage is to hear the best of the best.” The band’s newest album, Cousin, was released in 2023, followed by 2024’s Hot Sun Cool Shroud EP.

Wilco

Wilco has spent decades making American rock that feels unsettled, lived-in, and quietly adventurous. Led by Jeff Tweedy, the Chicago-based band started with alternative-country roots before expanding into a wider sound shaped by folk, noise, studio experiments, and patient guitar work.1,2

The band’s catalog includes Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, A Ghost Is Born, Sky Blue Sky, and the Mermaid Avenue projects with Billy Bragg, which set Woody Guthrie lyrics to new music and produced California Stars.1

Wilco’s Background

Wilco formed after the breakup of Uncle Tupelo, the alternative-country band that included Jeff Tweedy before he started Wilco. Tweedy relocated to Chicago and was joined by former Uncle Tupelo members Ken Coomer, John Stirratt, and Max Johnston.1

The band’s 1995 debut, A.M., still carried roots-rock and alternative-country ties, but Being There widened the sound in 1996 with keyboards and noisier textures.1 In 1998, Wilco teamed with Billy Bragg on Mermaid Avenue, using unpublished Woody Guthrie lyrics as the foundation for new songs.1

Wilco’s Awards

Wilco’s awards history reflects a band with album-level respect and a long place in American live music.

  • Grammy Award - Best Alternative Music Album (2005): A Ghost Is Born won Best Alternative Music Album at the 47th Annual Grammy Awards, giving Wilco its first Grammy win.3
  • Austin City Limits Hall of Fame - Inductee (2021): Wilco was inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame in 2021 after multiple appearances at ACL Live at The Moody Theater.4
  • Grammy Awards - Multiple Nominations (1999-2016): Wilco earned additional Grammy nominations for Mermaid Avenue, Mermaid Avenue Vol. II, Sky Blue Sky, Wilco (The Album), The Whole Love, and Star Wars, reflecting recognition across alternative rock, rock, Americana, and folk categories.3

Wilco’s Biggest Hits

Wilco’s most-played songs come from three different corners of the band’s catalog: the fractured beauty of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, the lush studio-pop world of Summerteeth, and the guitar-led calm of Sky Blue Sky.1,5

  • Jesus, Etc. (2002): From Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Jesus, Etc. remains one of Wilco’s most widely played songs, pairing strings and a soft vocal melody with the album’s uneasy beauty.2,5
  • How to Fight Loneliness (1999): From Summerteeth, the track shows the band’s orchestral pop side, with bright arrangements set against darker lyrics.1,5
  • Impossible Germany (2007): From Sky Blue Sky, Impossible Germany gives Nels Cline’s guitar work room to carry the song, helping make it one of the band’s lasting live and studio favorites.1,5

See Wilco Live

Wilco live sets can reach deep into the band’s catalog without feeling like a greatest-hits run. Older songs, later material, covers, and extended guitar passages all have a place in their shows.6
