About Sigur Rós
Sigur Rós are one of the most successful bands of recent times and one of Iceland’s most successful acts of all time, with six number ones in their home country and a trio of Platinum albums globally. In the years since Kveikur, the band launched the ‘Liminal’ soundbaths and endless playlists, built around blissed-out re-imaginings of moments from Sigur Rós’s catalogue both familiar and obscure.
Sigur Rós
The Icelandic band Sigur Rós was formed by three teenagers and named after one of the band members’ sisters. Formed in 1994, Sigur Rós gained attention in Iceland after releasing their debut album Von in 1997.1
The band’s post-rock sound blends unique classical, ambient, and ethereal sounds, and they often sing in both English and Icelandic. The result is a unique, atmospheric sound that has struck a chord with audiences across the globe.2

Sigur Rós’s Background
Sigur Rós was formed by vocalist and guitarist Jón Þór Birgisson (Jónsi), bassist Georg Hólm, and drummer Agust Gunnarsson. The trio was all teenagers when they created their group in 1994, and by 1997, they released their first LP, Von. In 1998, the group added a multi-instrumentalist, Kjartan Sveinsson.1
The band rose in popularity in Iceland shortly after their first LP's release, and by 1999 had gained recognition across Europe as well. The band released several albums and many singles over the following years, as well as a documentary about their time spent touring Iceland and playing free concerts. But in 2008, the group went on hiatus with no definite end date. That hiatus ended just a few years later in 2012.1
