The very first New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival was held in 1970.2,3 Mahalia Jackson, a New Orleans local often referred to as one of America's greatest singers, was one of the headliners. This encapsulates the spirit of the festival and its goal: honoring the city’s deep musical roots, cultural traditions, and the fact that the city is the birthplace of jazz.2,4
What began as a local showcase quickly grew into an internationally renowned celebration, blending jazz, blues, gospel, R&B, and global sounds. Over the decades, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival has become a cultural touchstone, uniting multiple generations of artists and fans while preserving and promoting the unique heritage of New Orleans.

- Re-Entry & Smoking: Re-entry is permitted based on the type of ticket you have, with past events allowing re-entry at specific pedestrian gates for Grand Marshal tickets, Krewe of Jazz Fest tickets, and GA+ wristbands.6 Smoking is allowed outdoors but not in enclosed spaces, including grandstands and tents.
- Payment Options: The entire event is cashless, with vendor, ticket, and food booths only accepting debit/credit cards and digital payments like Google Pay and Apple Pay. However, there are two cash exchange booths if you only have cash.
- Prohibited Items: No outside food or beverages, large chairs or wagons, video and audio recording equipment, and weapons or illicit drugs.
- Age Restrictions: The festival is all-ages, with child tickets for those ages 2-10 and children under the age of two receiving free admission.
