He was raised in Staffordsville, a rural community in Johnson County.As a teenager, Stapleton taught himself to play the guitar and developed a love of songwriting. In 1996, he moved to Nashville to study biomedical engineering at Vanderbilt University. But his heart wasn&rsquo;t in it, and he dropped out and moved back home.For a few years, Chris played his music in bars while making extra cash from casual jobs. He once again moved to Nashville in 2001 and was signed with Leslie and Sea Gayle Music Publishing as a songwriter.After working with a range of artists, including <a href="https://www.axs.comartists/200410/gary-allan-tickets" target="_blank">Gary Allan</a>, Patty Loveless, and <a href="https://www.axs.com/artists/105848/josh-turner-tickets" target="_blank">Josh Turner</a>, Stapleton joined the band, SteelDrivers, in 2006.
