History of the Houston Rockets

The franchise began as the San Diego Rockets in 1967 before moving to Houston in 1971.2 In the early years, Elvin Hayes and Calvin Murphy emerged as standout players, and the arrival of Moses Malone in 1976 helped the team secure its first winning season and a trip to the conference finals.2 Drafting Hakeem Olajuwon in 1984 marked the start of one of the Rockets’ most successful eras, culminating in back‑to‑back NBA championships in 1994 and 1995 under coach Rudy Tomjanovich.2 In the years that followed, stars like Clyde Drexler, Charles Barkley, Tracy McGrady, Yao Ming, and James Harden continued to shape the team’s identity.2
