About Stiefel Theatre

Stiefel Theatre opened on May 19, 1931, as the Fox-Watson Theatre and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.1 After decades as a movie house, the theatre closed in 1987, then became city-owned.1 A major restoration followed, and the theatre reopened on March 8, 2003.1,2

Since reopening, the stage has featured BB King, Merle Haggard, Alison Krauss, The Avett Brothers, and other national touring acts.1 Later downtown revitalization work added a new sound system, stage improvements, remodeled backstage spaces, and a rebuilt historic tower.2
