Shakira’s Background
Shakira was born in 1977 in Barranquilla, Colombia, to a Lebanese father and a Colombian mother. She began performing through belly dancing and, by age 10, was writing songs and entering local talent competitions. In 1990, a local theater producer helped her secure an audition with a Sony executive, leading to her first recording contract.
Just a year later, she released her debut album, Magia (1991). After two moderately successful albums and a brief acting role in the Colombian telenovela El Oasis, Shakira returned to music with Pies Descalzos, the album that launched her into widespread popularity.1
