David Phelps Biography
David Phelps has one of the most electrifying voices ever to enter the world of gospel music. As a member of the Gaither Vocal Band, David has received four Dove Awards, two Grammy Awards, and more than 13 gold and 15 platinum-selling projects. As a soloist, he received 2009 Dove Award nominations for Male Vocalist of the Year and Long Form Video for his Christmas DVD, O Holy Night. And his unforgettable voice is matched only by his deep understanding of music.
His natural gift for music was evident when David was very young and he knew early in life that he wanted to be a performer. While earning his degree in vocal performance from Baylor University, David was given numerous opportunities to venture into the world of secular music. “I had several teachers who felt that I should be singing opera or performing somewhere on Broadway,” he recalls. “In college particularly, I had a teacher who kept pushing me strongly toward classical music, but when she finally accepted that Christian music was what God was calling me to do, that became the turning point for me.”
While studying at Baylor, David met Lori Purtle, who has been his wife and rock-solid support for nearly two decades. The couple have four great kids – Callie, Maggie Beth, Grant and Coby – and the Phelps reside in the country outside Nashville, Tennessee.
His new album, Classic, is proving to be just that. Huge arrangements with powerful vocals is the order of the day.
