Ralf Schmitz begann früh, auf den Brettern, die die Welt bedeuten zu stehen. Schon als Eleve am Landrat-Lucas-Gymnasium in Leverkusen-Opladen nahm Schmitz an verschiedenen Theateraufführungen teil und absolvierte nach Abitur und Wehrersatzdienst Schauspiel- sowie eine klassische Tanzausbildung und nahm Gesangsunterricht.

Für Vier Jahre war Schmitz Teil des Ensemble des Improvisationstheaters "Die Springmaus" in Bonn. 2003 erhielt er für seine Rolle bei der  TV-Serie "Die Dreisten Drei" den Preis als „Newcomer des Jahres“ beim Deutschen Comedypreis und wurde zudem für die Rose d’Or und den Deutschen Fernsehpreis nominiert. 2005 wurde der gebürtige Leverkusener Schmitz für den Deutschen Comedypreis, diesmal in der Kategorie „Bester deutscher Komiker“, nominiert. Dieser Preis blieb ihm verwehrt, aber mit der damals erfolgreichen Impro-Serie "Schillerstraße" konnte der Komiker in der Kategorie „Beste deutsche Impro-Show“ reüssieren. Im gleichen Jahr ging Schmitz mit seinem ersten Soloprogramm "Schmitz komm raus" auf Deutschlandtour.

Auch der Sprung auf die Kinoleinwand gelang Schmitz. In Otto Waalkes' Kinokomödien 7" Zwerge – Männer allein im Wald" und "7 Zwerge – Der Wald ist nicht genug", die 2004 bzw. 2006 in die Kinos kamen, spielte der Leverkusener Schmitz den Zwerg Sunny. Zu Beginn des Jahres 2006 strahlte Sat.1 eine nach ihm benannte Fernsehshow aus, in der er Teile seines Bühnenprogramms sowie diverse Sketche präsentierte.
