Mindless Behavior Biography

In just the past few years, teen-pop/R&B quartet Mindless Behavior have opened up sold-out shows for the likes of Justin Bieber and Janet Jackson, taken the stage at two White House events, and backed up their hit-packed debut album with a national tour that’s soon to be the subject of their own feature-length documentary and concert movie. In the midst of all that action, Mindless Behavior’s Prodigy, Roc Royal, Ray Ray, and Princeton have dedicated untold hours to meeting up and interacting with their international fanbase, a rapidly multiplying network that includes more than 500,000 mobile fan-list subscribers, millions following their social media profiles, and the thousands of fans who turn up at each of the group’s famously frenzied in-store appearances. So when it came time to create their follow-up to #1 Girl (a top 10 debut on the Billboard Top 200 chart), Mindless Behavior ditched the standard approach to album-making and started recording songs while still out on the road. Deftly capturing the frenetic energy of its recording locales—including Miami, Atlanta, and Los Angeles—All Around The World (Streamline/Conjunction/Interscope Records) finds Mindless Behavior pushing deeper into the high-powered, hook-laden pop/R&B/hip-hop hybrid that made their debut so instantly irresistible and won the group so many intensely devoted fans throughout the globe.

For help in building a bigger, bolder sound on All Around The World, Mindless Behavior teamed up with a host of A-list producers that represent the most vital elements of today’s pop landscape. With its infectious mix of club-ready bangers, uptempo urban anthems, and stunningly soulful love songs, the album features production from hitmakers like Sean Garrett (Usher, Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj), Team S. Dot (Diddy - Dirty Money), Walter Millsap (Beyoncé, Timbaland, Alicia Keys), Rob Wells (Justin Bieber, Adam Lambert), and Ester Dean (Rihanna, Katy Perry). Not only showcasing each member’s ever-elevating vocal work, All Around The World represents a new level of sophistication in Mindless Behavior’s song content.

“All the touring and traveling we’ve done over the last couple of years have opened our minds and helped us to grow up a lot, so we wanted to share those kinds of experiences on the new album,” explains Prodigy. AddsPrinceton: “The new songs are stories about what’s happened in our lives over the past few years, but at the same time it’s an album you can really dance to and let go and just have fun.”

Indeed, All Around The World goes full throttle right from the first single “Keep Her On The Low,” a fierce and gritty yet impossibly catchy hip-hop track whose video flaunts Mindless Behavior’s dynamic dance skills. On the album’s futuristic, electro-fueled title track, Mindless Behavior blend throbbing beats and super-slick synth with pop-perfect harmonies. Proving the group’s versatility, “Used To Be” is an achingly sweet breakup song marked by heart-on-sleeve confessions and a tender, piano-laced groove. And on tracks like “I Lean” and “Band Aid,” Mindless Behavior merge lovesick lyrics and beat-soaked melodies to blissful effect.

For Mindless Behavior, that seamless fusion of sweetness and swagger owes largely to the group’s uncommon chemistry. Formed in 2008, Mindless Behavior was assembled by Conjunction Entertainment Inc. CEO Walter Millsap, Streamline Records head Vincent Herbert (Lady Gaga), manager Keisha Gamble, songwriter Candice Nelson (Mary J. Blige, Britney Spears, Ciara), and choreographer David Scott. After auditioning more than 600 kids, the team chose Prodigy (a YouTube sensation and supremely skilled vocalist and dancer), Ray Ray (a former apprentice of legendary L.A. battle dancer Tommy the Clown), Roc Royal (a rapper who first began rhyming at eight-years-old), and Princeton (a self-taught dancer who launched his career at age four and starred in music videos for artists like Travie McCoy) to form the lineup of Mindless Behavior. Signed by IGA chairman Jimmy Iovine, the group released their first single “My Girl” in 2010 and soon saw the track land a nomination for the 2011 “Viewer’s Choice” BET Award. Also crowned “the princes of social media” by Teen Vogue, Mindless Behavior have now sold more than 845,000 singles and nabbed over 156 million views on YouTube.

Continuing their triumph, Mindless Behavior kicked off the new year by performing at the Kids’ Inaugural Concert in Washington, D.C., an event that marked their second meeting with President Barack Obama and his family. And to further usher in 2013, Mindless Behavior will follow up the release of All Around The World with the premiere of their own feature-length documentary and concert movie. Along with chronicling their life on the road, Mindless Behavior: All Around The World offers a glimpse into the group’s close connection with their fans and the staggering growth of the “Mindless Movement.”

With a goal of empowering kids across the planet, the Mindless Movement is “all about having the freedom to express yourself and make the best of who you are, and not letting anything hold you back from that,” according to Roc-Royal. A key element of the Mindless lifestyle, that self-celebration is also infused into every track on All Around The World. “Our message is a huge part of our music—you can hear it in everything we put out,” says Ray Ray. “Over the past couple years we’ve had a lot of fans come up to us and tell us, ‘I’m more confident now, I’m being myself, I’m so much stronger.’ It’s amazing to deliver that message to people and see our music make some kind of positive change in our fans’ lives.”
