Born Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, Megan’s musical talent was inspired by her mother, a rapper who went by the name Holly-Wood.4 Megan began rapping as a teenager, but was encouraged by her mother to wait to pursue a career in music until after she turned 21.1
While in college at Texas Southern University, Megan Thee Stallion released her first single, Like a Stallion, on the music-sharing platform SoundCloud.1 Megan continued self-releasing mix tapes in 2016 and 2017, before signing her first record label in 2018, becoming the first female to sign with 1501 Certified Entertainment, an independent label in Houston.1
