Conceived by British producer Judy Craymer in the early 1990s, Mamma Mia! originated from the idea of weaving ABBA's songs into a cohesive narrative. Catherine Johnson was commissioned to write the book, and ABBA's Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus were also involved in the production.
