Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds’s Background
Lead singer Nick Cave was born in a rural town in Victoria, Australia, and began singing when he joined a cathedral choir at the age of eight.2 At age 12, he was sent to a boarding school in Melbourne, where he would meet the friends with whom he’d form his first band, Boys Next Door, in the mid-1970s.
Boys Next Door released several records before changing their name to Birthday Party and relocating to London.2 The band signed a record contract and released their first album in 1982, but broke up the following year.
Two members, Nick Cave and Mick Harvey, went on to form Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds with guitarist Blixa Bargeld and bassist Barry Adamson, although the band’s roster would go on to see many shifts in following decades. The band released their debut album From Her to Eternity in June 1984. Mick Harvey would leave the band in 2009, and was replaced by Ed Kuepper.3
