DEVO's Background
DEVO formed in 1973 at Ohio's Kent State University, where Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale developed a theory of "de-evolution," the idea that humanity was regressing rather than advancing, as a response to the political and social upheaval of the era.1
The band built their early sound around a mutant hybrid of electronics, art punk, and sardonic humor that found few peers.1 In 1978, with recommendations from David Bowie and Iggy Pop, they secured a recording contract and released their debut album Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, produced by Brian Eno.2 Their third album, Freedom of Choice (1980), broke them into the mainstream with the hit single Whip It, which aired on MTV during the channel's first year on air.3
