The Fray formed in 2002 in Denver, Colorado, after former school classmates Isaac Slade and Joe King reconnected and began writing music together. They expanded the lineup with drummer Ben Wysocki and guitarist David Welsh, building a local following through independent releases including the Movement and Reason EPs.¹

Support from the Denver radio station KTCL contributed to the band attracting the attention of Epic Records, which signed The Fray in 2004. Their debut album, How to Save a Life, established the band’s piano-forward rock sound and marked a breakthrough in their career.¹
