Foo Fighters

Foo Fighters is a rock band fronted by Dave Grohl. Broadly categorized as alternative rock, the band has roots in grunge and punk rock.

Their punchy, fast-paced catalogue has made Foo Fighters a globally successful live act. Hits like Learn to Fly and Everlong have remained alt-rock mainstays for decades.

Grohl’s distinctive vocal style combines a melodic baritone with gritty high notes. Between heavy, distorted guitar tones and crashing drums, Foo Fighters delivers a high-energy live show.1

Foo Fighters’ Background

Dave Grohl formed Foo Fighters in Seattle, WA in 1994 after drumming for the era-defining, albeit short-lived, grunge band Nirvana. He recorded all the instruments and vocals for the self-titled debut album.2

After the quick success of the band’s debut, Grohl needed to put together a touring band. He hired fellow Nirvana alum Pat Smear, as well as Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith, formerly of Sunny Day Real Estate.

Since their first tour in 1996, Foo Fighters has won numerous awards and released multiple platinum-selling albums. The lineup has changed over the years, including Alanis Morissette’s former drummer Taylor Hawkins, for over two decades until his passing in 2023. However, Grohl’s lead vocals and rhythm guitar have been a constant.1

Foo Fighters’ Awards

Foo Fighters have been an award-winning act almost since their formation. Throughout their career, the band has earned dozens of nominations and awards.3

  • Grammy Awards (2001, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2018, 2022): In addition to Grammy wins, including Best Rock Album, Best Short Form Music Video, and Best Rock Performance, Foo Fighters have been nominated over 30 times total.3
  • MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) (1996, 2011): Foo Fighters won the VMA for Best Group Video in 1996 with Big Me and Best Rock Video in 2011 with Walk, as well as over 20 other nominations.3
  • American Music Awards - Favorite Alternative Artist - (2011): Mumford & Sons and The Black Keys were also nominated in 2011.4

Foo Fighters’ Biggest Hits

Despite their scrappy origins in the underground grunge scene, Foo Fighters has achieved massive mainstream notoriety. Some of their biggest hits include:

  • Foo Fighters (1995): After Nirvana’s disbanding, Dave Grohl was in talks to drum for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, but his first solo project sold over 1 million copies, launching one of the most successful rock bands of all time.5
  • Everlong (1997): This was the second single from Foo Fighters’ sophomore album The Colour and the Shape, and remains one of the band’s best-known tracks, with two platinum certifications.6
  • Best of You (2005): Foo Fighters’ highest-charting single is this hard-rocking entry that also went double platinum.7
