About Libbey Bowl
Libbey Bowl began with outdoor concerts in Ojai Civic Center Park, now Libbey Park. The Ojai Music Festival held its first outdoor concert there in 1952, using a temporary platform and canvas tarp for two concerts conducted by Thor Johnson.6 A permanent outdoor theater followed in 1954, and planning began for a permanent Bowl and Shell in 1955.6
Completed in 1957 for $12,000, the Ojai Festival Bowl opened with the West Coast performance of Aaron Copland’s The Tender Land, conducted by Copland himself.6 By the 1970s, it had become Libbey Bowl after Civic Park was renamed as Libbey Park.6
