About Gonzalo Rubalcaba Quintet
This is not simply a quartet, but a line-up in which every single name stands for world-class musicianship: Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Chris Potter, Larry Grenadier, and Eric Harland are among the defining musical voices of modern jazz.
Under the project title First Meeting, four heavyweights come together in this formation for the very first time, each contributing their own compositions and arrangements. The result is a concert of rare intensity: highly virtuosic, open, explosive, and driven by four artists who have been performing on the world's most important stages for decades.
Gonzalo Rubalcaba is one of the great pianists of our time. The Cuban master pianist is a multiple Grammy Award winner and, since the 1990s, has stood for a unique fusion of Afro-Cuban tradition, modern jazz language, and world-class pianism. Chris Potter is regarded as one of the most important saxophonists of his generation and has worked with artists including Dave Holland, Pat Metheny, Paul Motian, and Steely Dan. Larry Grenadier shaped the Brad Mehldau Trio for many years and has played with Pat Metheny and Charles Lloyd; Eric Harland is one of the most in-demand drummers in modern jazz and can be heard on hundreds of recordings.
This band is a true all-star project in the best sense: not a backing band, but four equal voices operating at the highest level. When Gonzalo Rubalcaba's harmonic imagination, Chris Potter's saxophone power, Larry Grenadier's bass foundation, and Eric Harland's rhythmic energy come together, contemporary jazz emerges in its most concentrated form.
An essential concert for anyone who wants to experience what a real supergroup sounds like.
