The Woodentops Biography

Taking the punk rock 'do it yourself' ideals, the young Battersea arthouse Woodentops swiftly found themselves championed in 1984 by John Peel, recording for Food records and then Rough Trade while tour supporting for the likes of Julian Cope ,The Smiths, Echo and The Bunnymen and Everything But The Girl and reaching the ears of David Bowie who collected every release before finally securing them to support in 1988.

The independent charts of the 80’s saw plenty of top 5 action from this group but a Radio One blitz of play for the single "Good Thing" from the album Giant, saw them in the mainstream world touring worldwide constantly. The three original members, Rolo McGinty, Simon Mawby and Frank De Freitas took most of the 90’s off with vocalist Rolo leaping into electronics with his project Pluto, remixing and collaborating with techno /breakbeat / drum and bass artists before beginning a new term with the Woodentops.
